BARBER POLE RAG - CHARLES JOHNSON (1911)
Not one of Charles Johnson's better known rags, "Barber Pole" is, nonetheless, full of melodic invention. It is a good indication of the variety of influences on Johnson's music. Section A, as well as the intro, is really a "folk rag", reminiscent of "Turkey In The Straw". The B section, repeated at D and up a fourth, sounds almost classical. C, with its straight-forward, lyrical melody, has a character of its own and reminds me of the Yale fight song,
